A Private Sanctuary Above the Rice Fields

Adi Tax 1 occupies a privileged position in the southern highlands of Bali, sited at coordinates that place it within reach of Ubud's cultural corridor while remaining genuinely removed from the noise of the main tourist arteries. The architecture draws on vernacular Balinese principles — open-air pavilions, carved teak detailing, and hand-laid volcanic stone walls — while introducing a spare, contemporary sensibility that refuses excess. The result is a space that feels both rooted in its landscape and entirely of the present.

The property is scaled deliberately for two guests. Every decision — from the width of the daybed to the orientation of the outdoor shower — has been made with a couple or solo traveller in mind. There is no shared pool, no lobby, no distraction. The experience is designed around proximity: to the garden, to the view, to the particular quality of Balinese afternoon light that moves from amber to rose before the fireflies appear at dusk.

The surrounding neighbourhood is characterised by working rice terraces, family compound temples, and the dense tropical canopy that defines this part of the island. Local warungs serving freshwater fish and slow-cooked rendang are a short walk in either direction. The nearest larger town offers art galleries, organic markets, and some of the island's most respected restaurants, accessible within a brief drive. The property sits close enough to engage with Bali's cultural richness and far enough to leave it behind entirely.

Practically, the villa has been configured for ease of arrival and seamless day-to-day living. Guests receive detailed pre-arrival instructions, GPS coordinates for precise navigation, and direct contact with the host team. Transfers from Ngurah Rai International Airport can be arranged on request. The minimum stay and house rules are communicated clearly at the time of booking, ensuring no surprises on either side.

From First Light to the Sound of Gamelan

You arrive in the late afternoon, when the air carries the scent of frangipani and incense from the nearby family temple. The driveway is flanked by mature banana palms, and the first sound you register is the absence of traffic. Check-in takes minutes — the host team is present, unhurried, and speaks English fluently. A cold towel and welcome drink are waiting before you have even set down your bag.

Morning at Adi Tax 1 begins with light. The east-facing terrace catches the first sun as it clears the ridge, and breakfast — freshly cut fruit, strong Balinese coffee, and whatever you have requested the night before — arrives at the table without ceremony. The rice fields below catch the morning mist in a way that feels deliberate, as though the landscape has arranged itself for the occasion. There is no urgency to move.

In the afternoon, the options spread outward. The cultural sites of the Ubud corridor are within a short drive: royal palace courtyards, silver workshops in Celuk, the terraced geometry of Tegallalang. Alternatively, the property itself offers everything required for a full day of doing very little — shade, space, and the particular pleasure of a cold shower under open sky. Local staff are available to arrange a traditional Balinese massage in the villa garden, performed by therapists from the neighbouring village.

By evening, the temperature drops just enough to make an open-air dinner feel ideal. The host can recommend specific warungs by cuisine, price point, and distance. Return after dark to a villa that has been quietly prepared — mosquito coils lit, lighting adjusted, the bed turned down with a small offering of jasmine. The sound of distant gamelan practice drifts across the terraces. Bali does not disappear at night; it simply shifts register.
